FIX Union × Nature
When Nature Becomes the Co-Author of Urban Spaces

A new product from Fix Union introduces exclusive tree grates designed to protect the root systems of trees in urban environments, prevent soil compaction from foot traffic, and at the same time create a neat and safe pedestrian space.
In modern cities, trees serve far more purposes than simply decorative ones. They help reduce street temperatures during hot periods, purify the air, absorb noise, and create a more comfortable microclimate for residents. However, in densely built urban environments, tree root systems often suffer from mechanical damage and constant pressure from pedestrian activity.
One of the most effective solutions for protecting urban trees is the installation of tree grates. Fix Union has introduced new round and square grate models that combine protection of the root system, aesthetic value for public spaces, and the principles of inclusive design.
In cities, tree roots are frequently exposed to pressure from pedestrians, bicycles, and maintenance vehicles. Compacted soil reduces the flow of air and water to the root system, which negatively affects the health and longevity of trees.
Tree grates address several issues at once. They protect surface roots from damage, prevent soil around the trunk from being trampled, and at the same time allow water and air to reach the soil. As a result, trees can maintain healthier growing conditions even in dense urban environments.
Beyond functionality, these grates also help organize pedestrian areas, ensuring that the surface around trees remains level and safe for walking.
A distinctive feature of the new grates is their carefully designed pattern developed according to the principles of inclusivity. In urban environments, it is important that every element of public infrastructure is safe and accessible for all users.
The openings and geometry of the grate are designed so that walking canes, stroller wheels, or wheelchair wheels do not get stuck in the surface. This is a crucial detail, as many traditional grates have wide gaps that can create obstacles or safety risks for people with reduced mobility.
In this way, the new grates not only protect trees but also contribute to a more accessible and inclusive urban environment for people with different needs.
Tree grates have long become an important element of urban design. In many European cities, they are used not only as a technical solution but also as a tool for shaping the visual identity of streets and public spaces.
The round grates from Fix Union feature a contemporary decorative pattern that complements pedestrian zones, squares, boulevards, and public areas. Thanks to a variety of design options, they can integrate equally well into historic city centers as well as modern urban developments.
The structures are treated with hot-dip galvanization, which ensures high corrosion resistance and long-term durability in outdoor conditions. If needed, the grates can be painted in any color from the RAL palette, allowing them to match specific urban design concepts.
Structurally, the grates consist of modular elements connected with bolted joints. Each element includes pre-prepared mounting feet designed for secure installation into the surrounding pavement.
An additional tree guard can also be installed if required. This structure helps protect the trunk from mechanical damage, which is particularly important in areas with heavy pedestrian or vehicle traffic.
The installation configuration can be adapted according to the needs of a specific project, allowing the grates to integrate seamlessly into various paving systems and types of public spaces.
Modern urban development increasingly focuses on preserving green infrastructure. Trees play a crucial role in the urban ecosystem, and their longevity directly depends on how well the space around them is designed and maintained.
Tree grates help preserve trees, maintain proper soil moisture balance, and prevent damage to root systems. In the long term, this means lower costs for replacing urban greenery and a more stable ecological environment in cities.
The combination of functionality, inclusivity, and design makes such urban elements an essential component of contemporary city planning. They simultaneously protect nature, improve pedestrian safety, and contribute to higher-quality urban architecture.
