Koliyivshchyna Square Reconstruction in Lviv: Historic Urban Revitalization and Modern Public Space Design

The Koliyivshchyna Square reconstruction project in Lviv has been featured in the international collection Contemporary Landscape Architecture Around the World by Braun Publishing. Street furniture and urban design elements by FIX were integrated into the renewed square, creating a cohesive and functional public space in Lviv.

Located in the heart of the historic Jewish quarter, this intimate public square in Lviv spans approximately 600 m², blending historic heritage with modern urban design thinking. Despite being the smallest square in the city, Koliyivshchyna Square exemplifies historic square renovation and urban revitalization in Lviv, preserving the authentic character of the space while introducing subtle contemporary accents.

The reconstruction preserved the square’s intimacy while transforming it into a modern, functional, and vibrant public space in Lviv.

A key feature of the project is the restoration and integration of an authentic historic well, which supplied water to the entire quarter until the early 20th century. The well restoration in Lviv was based on thorough archaeological research. The paving includes authentic 19th–early 20th century cobblestones and granite slabs, while light-grey paving enhances moisture retention and protects trees. Traces of former buildings are marked with clinker bricks and highlighted with brass plaques as historical markers. Two rows of hawthorn trees define a soft, natural boundary for the square. A replica of a historic street lantern in Lviv was also installed. Historically, this square was a meeting place for residents of the Jewish district before World War II. The top of the restored well (the ciamryna, mostly wooden logs) features trilingual inscriptions honoring the former residents.

The street furniture in Lviv at Koliyivshchyna Square was carefully selected to match the historical style: chairs recall those that residents once brought outdoors to socialize with neighbors. The space also features elegant tree guards, protective trunk structures, and minimalist outdoor trash bins, creating a seamless combination of history and modern urban functionality.

Each piece of street furniture combines handcrafted quality with modern technology, ensuring durability, functionality, and aesthetic appeal. All elements were designed to integrate with the historic context, enhance the square’s architectural composition, and meet high standards for urban public space in Lviv.

The publication highlights local traditions, sustainability, and modern technology, serving as a key reference for architects, urban planners, and students.
